Dermatology services procurement
Dermatology services treat patients with a variety of skin problems. Approximately 13 million people across England and Wales present to their GP with a skin problem every single year. 6.1% (0.8 million) of these consultations are referred for specialist advice.
According to the British Association of Dermatology, 80% of GP consultations for skin disease are for 1 of 10 dermatological diseases – eczema, psoriasis, acne, urticarial, rosacea, infections/infestations, leg ulcers and stasis eczema, lichen planus (itchy rash) and drug rashes.
Currently, patients are referred to dermatology services provided at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals for further diagnosis and treatment. Commissioners instead want to see services delivered in the community, enabling GPs themselves to provide these services, referring more complex cases to either a consultant-led community service or hospital. This would allow the vast majority of patients to be diagnosed and treated faster.
The way dermatology services in the North West Surrey area are delivered is set to change under new proposals from NHS commissioners. These proposals will improve patient experience, reduce unwarranted service variation and support NHS invest in preventative medicine.
We will be running a competitive tender for these services starting in the new year, and are looking to engage patients and members of the public to provide guidance, experience and feedback on our plans.
