What are Musculoskeletal (MSK) services?

The musculoskeletal or ‘locomotor’ system gives people the ability to move. Musculoskeletal disorders are injuries or pain in the body's joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves, tendons and structures that support the limbs, neck and back. Such disorders and injuries include degenerative diseases and inflammatory conditions that cause pain and impair normal activities.

There are more than 200 musculoskeletal conditions including arthritis, back pain and osteoporosis. Millions of people in England are affected, meaning there is lots of demand for services and support.  While it is recognised that MSK conditions are not life threatening, the effects can have a tremendous influence on quality of life and the ability to lead a complete, liberated and painless lifestyle

Musculoskeletal services include prevention, assessment, diagnostics and treatment delivered by a wide range of professional disciplines, mainly orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, other manual therapists, rheumatologists, pain management specialists, podiatrists and psychologists.  Services include podiatry, orthotics, rheumatology, chronic pain services, occupational therapy and MSK physiotherapy amongst others.
