Improving Musculoskeletal Services in North West Surrey
Following the recent procurement of an integrated musculoskeletal (iMSK) service for patients across North West Surrey, the new service commenced on 1st October 2016 and the provider is Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The ‘integrated’ service offers support for patients requiring orthopaedic, pain management and rheumatology expertise, ensuring that support is tailored specifically to the most effective management of your health condition.
The musculoskeletal or ‘locomotor’ system gives people the ability to move. Musculoskeletal disorders are injuries or pain in the body’s joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves, tendons and structures that support the limbs, neck and back.
There are more than 200 musculoskeletal conditions including arthritis, back pain and osteoporosis and while it is recognised that these conditions are not life threatening, the effects can have a tremendous influence on people’s quality of life.
The new service includes a comprehensive range of complimentary disciplines including orthopaedics, podiatry, orthotics, rheumatology, chronic pain services, occupational therapy and musculoskeletal physiotherapy. These services are delivered by a wide range of professionals, all working together in the integrated service. These include: orthopaedic surgeons, extended scope practitioners, physiotherapists, other manual therapists, rheumatologists, pain management specialists, podiatrists and psychologists.
