Living a healthy lifestyle is easier than you think.  There are many simple ways in which you can improve your health and wellbeing.

Healthy eating

By making small changes to your diet, you can make a huge difference to your overall health and wellbeing.

The following three steps can help ensure you're giving your body all the goodness it needs:

  • aim to eat five portions of different fruit and vegetables per day (choose different colours for added variety)
  • cut down on foods with high levels of sugar, fat and salt (we know they're tasty – but try and keep them as treats rather part of your regular diet)
  • aim for a balanced diet which includes all the five main food groups.

Keeping fit

Regular exercise is vital for promoting a sense of wellbeing and improving and sustaining good health. There are lots of ways you can stay fit and healthy for free, like going for a walk or jog, doing housework, walking the dog or even dancing!

You don't have to pay a hefty gym membership to burn the calories.  Even doing household chores such as vacuuming and cleaning count.

Find out more about calories and getting active at the NHS Choices Health and fitness pages.

Quitting smoking

Everybody has their own reasons for wanting to stop smoking. Some people give up as part of a larger lifestyle change. They may want to be healthier, get fit, or save money. For others, it's more about how their smoking affects the people around them – their family, friends and especially their children.

Surrey Stop Smoking Service is on hand to offer advice and local support to help you succeed in kicking the habit.  The service runs weekly clinics at a range of locations across North West Surrey and offers telephone support and face-to-face contact at GP practices with stop smoking advisors.

If you're ready to begin your journey to a smoke-free future, or even if you just want to learn more about the choices available, call the service on 0845 602 3608 or email to talk to one of their Stop Smoking Specialists.

Alternatively, you can visit the NHS Choices website stop smoking pages.
